Meet Our Trumpet Section

Our trumpet section has been chosen for the variety and depth it can offer. All lead players and great improvisers in their own right, our trumpets offer a power house to compliment any big band.


Brain Moore
Brian Moore

Brian Moore is active as both a teacher and trumpet player in Exeter and Devon.
     He teaches trumpet at Exeter University, Exeter College and Exeter School.
     Brian also directs several youth ensembles, including the junior section of the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra, and co-directs the Exeter College Big Band.
     His playing is varied, and includes big band, classical, and show work.
     As well as The Dave Hankin Big Band, Brian also plays with AJ's Big Band and the Exeter College Dream Band.
     He has been principal trumpet of the EMG Symphony Orchestra in Exeter for thirteen years and also plays with the Ten Tors Symphony Orchestra as well as several other ensembles in the region.





Graham Hutton
Graham Hutton

Based in Exeter, Graham is one of the ‘in demand’ trumpet players across the region; specialising in the Jazz and Big Band idioms but also performing in a diverse range of other settings.
     Graham has performed professionally across the country with bands such as the Ray McVay Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Squadronaires whilst performing more locally with AJ’s Big Band.
     Graham is a founder member of Timewasters, a seven piece modern jazz fusion group which is a regular fixture on the jazz festival circuit.
     His trumpet session work is featured on a number of house, garage and rock music CD releases as well as Timewasters own recording “Welcome to Wasteland”.
     Having been a performing member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), Graham is now Conductor of the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra 1 (DYJO1).





Andy Stark
Andy Stark

Andy started playing at school in Paignton at the age of 13 and was gigging with his teacher at the age of 15 in local bands and orchestras.
     At 16 he joined the Royal Marines as a solo trumpet player, playing and touring extensively around the world ~ part of which was playing on the Royal Yacht Britannia as one of the youngest players at 19.
     Since leaving the Royal Marines, Andy's career now is teaching, conducting, band training and teaching players in the Army.
     Andy is very much in demand as a soloist in classical, military and jazz styles. He leads a brass ensemble in Devon.





Callam Dowd
Callam Dowd

Plymouth born Callam Dowd has been privileged to participate in local, regional and national musical performances.
     His Big Band interest developed whilst acting as lead trumpet for the "Berks Bucks and Oxfordshire Big Band" (BBO) during 2001-2003.
     Featuring solo performances on television programmes such as the BBC's Song of Praise and performing in award winning musicals such as "Korzak", Callam can now be found supporting local amateur theatrical societies throughout Plymouth and Devon.
